Utah Classical music of the Past

Utah Classical music of the Past

Classical Music has been a part of the Utah Arts scene since pioneer times. Some of those old scores are still available as sheet music in historic archives, and are still worth a listen, whether you are interested in hearing them for pleasure or for study. This site will soon present more than 50 new recordings of that old music, and will keep growing. We are offering this collection as a free music sharing project, done as a reminder that creativity is often its own reward, then and now. This site is new, and still under construction, so to hear more of the dozens of musical selections that will be coming here soon, please visit the music galleries at www.yandro.com where many others are currently available for free listening.

Until this new site is fully set up to host the many recordings planned to be here, enjoy a sample from this list of “teaser” selections.

  • “The Grasshopper“  is a clever little etude with attitude composed by Orson Pratt, Jr. in the 1860s. One of 30 piano solos in the collection. A live recording.  (Click the title.)
  • “The Wizard of the Wasatch“ was a march composed by Gustave Schuster as the theme for a festival in SLC around 1915.  (Click the title.)
  • “Four Seasons in Utah” arranged for string quartet from 4 songs (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) by Evan Stephens, from 1905 or earlier. Not the way Stephens conceived these pieces, but until this site comes up with a better way to record vocals, we’ll sprinkle in a few of these instrumental adaptations to let these gems be heard – even if in a different way.   (Audio only so far – click below to hear it.)

“Melody in A for violin and piano“, a 1905 selection by William C. Clive. Clive was one of the top local violin virtuosos of his time, as well as a music teacher, composer and publisher. One of a dozen ensemble works coming to this site.  This is a live recording commissioned for this gallery.  (Audio only so far – click below to hear it.)
